I'd like to thank all the members of the mallorn list
who sent me e-mails with advice on how to deal with
the split on my pumpkin Hera. She is out of critical
care and appears stabilized and is recovering nicely.
The split was about 4 inches long starting near the
base of the stem and into the top of the pumpkin. It
was 3/8ths of an inch wide at the widest and up to
three inches deep. I first brushed it down with
Capton powder daily for two days. When it appeared
dry and stable, I made up some flour dough and then
rolled the dough in Capton powder. I kneaded in about
two teaspoons of Capton powder and pushed the mix into
the split to seal it.
The dough dried out and left a hard patch inside the
split. The patch keeps the bugs and air out of the
split and also wicks out any moisture from inside the
split.
After several days now, the patch appears to be
working as the area around the patch appears firm, no
rot is apparent and the patch looks dry.
I think Hera is going to make it, although all growth
has stopped. She's out there now sulking in the
patch, totally pissed at the benign indifference of
the universe and life in general.
She's almost back to her old self!!
