RE: Andrew's comments

Gentlemen and Ladies,

An official weight, by definition, is a sound fruit, weighed on a certified
scale, with credible witnesses. Are you telling me that if a fruit at
Barnsville, or Circleville, or Half moon Bay would not be a record since it
was not 'sanctioned' by the GPC or WPC? What about the local fair?

I agree with Chris, an official record must follow well established
guidelines to be official. If I had the 'Worlds Biggest Zuchini' and there
was no weigh-off for zuchini, would it not be official?

Think about it!

Mike,

From your side of things, yes I don't think it matters as much. But from
the growers side for it to be a new record it should be weighed at a
weigh off. Your site is very important to all us growers and especially
me, and this sport wouldn't be what it is today without your site. But
for weights to count for something we need a little more rules in are
sport. To us growers a official weight counts for a lot more then a UOW
, EST, EXH does.

Mike,

Maybe I worded my response wrong, but I still disagree here. This is
were we get into problems. What is to prevent a grower from weighing a
pumpkin in Mid August, because he, she feels the pumpkin will not last
until October. If I had felt that way I would have weighed my 1058 Uow
sooner then I did last year. When people ask what my personal best is, I
say 1020 pounds because I feel the 1058 doesn't count. I think they
should all be weighed at some form of weigh off with many witnesses
around. If your going for a State record or provincial record I really
think it needs to be weighed at a weigh off, because I know if the
Canadian record was weighed at the local feed store with no credible
witnesses or only one or two of your friends around, growers would
always question its validity or say it doesn't count because it wasn't
weighed at a weigh off GPC or not. Just my opinion

>>Its not really a official new State record unless weighed at a
sanctioned site on Oct 5th.

I strongly disagree. As long as the pumpkin is weighed properly, is in
good shape and credibly witnessed, the date and location of the weighing
is irrelevant. I am personally dedicated to promoting the sport of giant
pumpkin growing rather than promoting sanctioned weighoffs. This is the
very reason I made my '
<http://www.hort.net/lists//pumpkins/sep02/msg00157.html> EXH, DQ, UOW,
EST' post. A grower should not be penalized or his achievement made less
significant just because he either does not have organized weighoffs in
his area or has chosen to weigh his pumpkin through a channel other than
an organized weighoff event. The location of the scale has nothing to do
with the pumpkin it weighs or the effort it took to get it there.
