Rotten Pumpkin
In the mid 90s I had a similar problem as Tom, except that my pumpkin
was not even close to a state record. The pumpkin looked OK and seemed
sound. It was placed on the scale at an angle and somewhat hard. This
caused an unknown soft spot to open and the pumpkin juices flowed. The
pumpkin was immediately disqualified. I was upset since this would have
been my personal best at the time, but I understood the ruling. There
was no second thought by anyone whether the pumpkin should be official
or not.
