Here is my two cents...yes the dif between a pumpkin and a squash is the
5 star stem to skin interface....but wait....look through the archives
and search for an old posting about Howard Dill's registared patent.
Now they call this a bla bla
I know there is a URL but I can't find it. You can add this your
justification. I can't remember what a PVP is? If the USDA classifies
it as a patent pumpkin can he overide this ruling for a fair?
OLD POSTING
Attention Pumpkin People:
Note the following from the USDA in response to my question. It looks
like
everyone is at least a little right. In the spirit of XMAS, is this
enough to
end the seed controversy and get on with just growing them?

Dear Ms. Stanton,
I was trying to determine whether or not Howard Dill has a PVP on what
is
being called "Dill's Atlantic Giant Pumpkin." Your system is so
complicated
that I was unable to find anything. In fact, I think I am getting a
headache
from working with it. Can you please help me?

'Dill's Atlantic Giant' is protected by PVP. The PV number is 8500204.
The following information is from our homepage.
Variety: Dill's Atlantic Giant
Taxon: Cucurbita maxima Duchesne
Crop: Pumpkin
Applicant_Owner: Howard Dill
Enterprises, Ltd.
Date Application Filed: 09/09/1985
Current_Status: Certificate issued
Date_Certificate_Issued: 05/30/1986
Years_Protected: 18
I'm sorry you found the system confusing. To locate a 'Dill's Atlantic
Giant", I selected databases from the homepage, then I selected Crop and
then
pumpkin from the list of crop types. Information on all pumpkin
applications
or certificates was
displayed.
Because of similarity in names, there has been some confusion between
'Atlantic Giant' and 'Dill's Atlantic Giant'. The variety 'Atlantic
Giant' is
a public
variety and is open for public use and sales.
Now this is a regestared variety.....another issue...why do they have
the world largest pumpkin in the Guniess book of records as a Atlantic
giant?
