Strange Late Season Growth

Strange Late Season Growth

I have recorded the following growth characteristics on AG’s that have
pronounced ribs, over the last 7 years. If your AG is heavy ribbed and set
before July 10th you may see some of this in your Pumpkin during September.
My AG-480-97-GB is going through most of these now and has been growing for 79
days so far.

1. Cantalouping swells in rain because it absorbs water and will shrink when
it dries out. Circumference will change up to 1/8 of an inch on a Pumpkin
over 110". A Pumpkin with wet Cantalouping probably weighs more.

2. After a heavy watering the ribs may swell upward pulling in the sides
causing the Circumference to stay the same or shrink. Within a day or to the
circumference will start to expand again. You can actually see the ribs
change shape.

3. Lumps will grow out as the Pumpkin tries to grow by cracking the skin as it
fights with a hardening skin.

4. A double rib may fill in with little or now change in Circumference.

5. Wrinkles will form between ribs as it grows.

6. Most of the Pumpkin may harden off leaving one tender side that may grow
faster than the other sides.

7. Growth may be as little as .062 a day and you may only pick up the change
every few days.

This is a difficult time to get an accurate measurement. To help with this I
Duct Tape the tape measure to several high spots in the back side of the
Pumpkin. This makes it easier to pick up low growth amounts.
