Re: Why do my Ipomea tricolor seedlings look so bad?

Annie, have not tried these from seed, but have and do grow tricolor.
It is, because of the large amount of white in the leaves, much less
vigorous than 'Blackie' or 'Margarita'. If you get albino seedlings
- all white leaves - they will likely die because they have no means
to photosynthesize at all - they need some green to do this. Any
with some color in their leaves have a chance of making it, but will
be very slow.

I also think you might want to make sure they don't cool off too
much. I have tubers and cuttings of all three in my greenhouse from
purchased plants last summer, and of the three varieties, tricolor is
not doing well. Have, I think, one left as the others simply rotted
over winter - it must have gotten too cold in there for it, whereas
'Blackie' and 'Margarita' have done just fine and are putting on new
growth as the days lengthen and it remains warmer in the greenhouse.

In the garden, tricolor is much slower to establish and does not want
a lot of hot sun like the others as the leaves will burn...it also
simply does not get as large. It's a lovely foliage plant, but much
trickier to grow IMO.
