What Marge said has been pretty much my experience. The only species
that has given me grief is Nicotiana gluaca, and I have only tried to
germinate it from one source. I am willing to believe that it was jus bad
seed, though my understanding is that it tends to be a fairly long lived seed.
The common flowering tobaccos, N. alata, N. sylvestris, etc all tend to
germinate quickly and easily, not requiring more than 2-3 weeks even at
slightly cooler temperatures (~68F). Nicotiana tobaccum and N. rustica
give similar germination for me. Bright light does seem to be critical
though.
