Re: Growing ferns from spores

    Okay, I'll bite.
I have never rooted rhododendrons without starting a few ferns in the
process. The first time, they turned out to be bear's foot ferns from a specimen
I had flourishing in the greenhouse. This last time it was a mixture of bracken and
maidenhair ferns, possibly related to the use of landscape bark in the cutting
box.
Ferns have an interesting and complex sex life, most of which is conducted inside
the cutting box. It is probably not enough to have humid bright conditions. You will
also need to mist the little green organs that pop up on the surface of the medium.
They need to mix body fluids.
You can probably disperse plenty of spores by sticking a few fronds into the box.
