Re: Subject: Thompson & Morgan's Poor quality seeds

Here is a little insight from someone in the business, at Arrowhead we
tend to sow the old seed for ourselves mostly because for a great many
species the old seed lots are the ones that germinate best. Last year we
made the mistake of sowing some fresh primula japonica seed, maybe 1%
germinated. This year we sowed the same seed (which had been stored at
room temperature) and nearly 100% is up. Only inexperianced amatures
worry about fresh seed,(that's ok; because they don't buy up all the
wonderful collected stuff that Archibalds and Ratko have stashed away,
leaving more for us) as to T&M I'm not sure what all the fuss is about,
we only buy a few things from them that are not available elsewhere, and
at this point seldom aquire plants that are generally considered easy
and we have no complaints about their quality. Then again we have
realistic expectations about how many seeds are likely to germinate.
