Actually, sterilizing soil or seed starting mix can do more harm than good.
Besides some "bad" germs and fungi there are more "good" ones. There is
usually a system of checks and balances for the good and bad. Frequently
when sterilized the medium is ripe for the introduction of many bad diseases
that can run rampant because there is no check on their proliferation.
Also, Many of these organisms are beneficial to plant roots and helps with
the uptake of nutrients. There are hundreds of synergistic relationships
between plant roots and the growing medium.
Damping off is frequently found to be most common where the seedlings are
spaced too close and there is a lack of air circulation. Damp off fungi hate
stale air!
