I accidentally stumbled upon how to germinate this species of tree. I have a
horsechestnut which drops many seeds. One fall I raked up piles of them and
did not get around to carting them away; then the following spring many
germinated, but because they were in a pile and the "rootlet" couldn't find
soil I had to find a better place for them, and many of them "took". Perhaps
there is a gas given off which induces germinaion , when they are left on
the ground overwinter just "where they fall" they do not seem to germinate.
