Did you have a particular species in mind, or just in general?

If this is a general application question, are you changing the
location/enviroment of the plants at the same time as transplanting them?
For instance it is better to move greenhouse raised seedlings outside a bit
at a time to acclimate them to the outside before transplanting them into
your flower bed.  

Sort of like culture shock to them, horti-culture shock?
