I may be way off base here but it ocurred to me that if you are putting even a
thin layer
of sand or perlite/granite on the surface of the potting mix you may be
inadvertantly
causing the new seedlings to rot when watered. The surface medium you use will
cause
the water to drain away quickly, but then it encounters the next layer of soil
and may
be staying wetter, and longer than you really want. I never, ever, layer
potting mediums
for the very reason that water will flow (or not flow) thru different meduims
at very different
rates. It is better to mix all ingredients well, incorporating more sand,
peat, vermiculite
etc...depending on what you need for that plant.
