Re: Paeonia seeds

Stop what you are doing now!! Paeonia dry stores just fine for moderate
periods and most from nursery sources are viable. They need LONG cycle
times, a minimum 3 months in each cycle and longer is usually better. We
may well be the largest grower of species paeonies in the U.S. and we do
know what we are doing. They do not respond to Ga3 but will germinate in
high percentages in due time. Roots are always formed first, and in most
species a further cold and warm cycle is needed to initiate shoots. The
American species seem to be the exception to this and a few of the tree
paeonies also put up shoots first season without a chill. They need deep
pots as the first season root formation is usually massive and are best
not disturbed in the pots until germination is complete ie. shoots are
fully formed. Cold temp should be 35-40 and warm 60 to 70 deg F. It is
best to start in a warm cycle but they will still germinate if started
cold it just takes longer. Watch for mice they love to dig those big fat
seeds especially if sown outside.
