I've used a cold frame for years in Ontario (zone 4b)

Made with bales  and old windows.  Works very well.  Have to use a light
bulb for heat on extremely cold nights.  Cover with tarps or plastic to
stop rain getting in.  Only drawback is you have to be there daily to
open/close the windows.
