Re: Lights

Hello Sven: I've used a combination of 1 warm and 1 cool fluorescent light
in each fixture, and I have five fixtures stacked on a home-made wooden
lath rack, for years. I have satisfactory results with starting seeds and
growing them to transplant size under this set-up, but it's important to
keep the seed pans and then the seedlings no more than 1-1/2" from the
lights to keep them from stretching. I grow about 100 types of perennial
and annual seed each year just to see what all the hype about anything new
is worth it. I also have one fixture that's 4' long and uses three
fluorescent bulbs, 1 warm and 2 cool. Under this fixture seedlings come
into bloom even before it's time to put them out to harden off. My light
stand is on a timer and I set it for 18 hrs on, 6 off to germinate seeds,
then adjust. I loosely drape the whole stand in clear plastic which keeps
in the humidity. The basement room temperature hovers below 60 all winter
but the bottom heat from the lights is great for bottom heat to germinate
the seedlings on the shelf above. If you'd like more info, e-mail me and
I'll draw you a sketch of how to make the light stand. Joanne
