I have sown perennials outdoors in the fall straight in the ground. They
seemed to grow fine, although sometimes they got weed choked by Spring. So,
I started sowing them in flats and that works great. I have a covered porch
to leave them on. Usually I cover them with plastic sheeting or domes so I
don't have to water them so often. I've never left them out in the open
because fire ants tend to get into them. The cycles of heat and cold act to
scarify the seed and they come up when they're ready.
