If mold or fungal growth appears on the seeds, add about 1 to 2 teaspoons
of liquid germicidal or anti-bacterial soap to 1 gallon of refrigerated
cold water in a jug and shake it up really well until the soap it totally
dispersed. Then pour the weak soap solution into an open container (like
a round plastic quart container 1/4 full) and carefully place the seed
into the soap solution to soak for a few minutes. Swirl the container of
soap solution a few times, but don't stir it with a spoon as this may risk
damaging the soft seeds. Then rinse the seeds under cold water in a very
fine wire mesh strainer for at least 1 to 2 minutes (best with a fine
spray, but not too forceful to damage the soft seeds). Then continue with
the stratification using clean materials.
This is a good reason why seeds should be rinsed under warm water for 30
to 60 seconds in a very fine wire mesh strainer prior to
sowing/stratification. However, many commercial suppliers of seed
already supply clean seed and this isn't usually necessary. However, it
is a useful precaution to take for wild collected seed or if their is a
lot of debris included with the seed when you receive it. Also examine
the seed with a loupe to see it it appears dirty or dusty as that is a
sure sign that you should rinse the seeds first.
