Ferns propagate generally by spores (the raised dots turning brownish after
release on the undersides of the leaves) but some like the Boston Fern will
spread by runners multiplying very quickly if in the ground.
Jacobina's (Justicia) are very easy to root from cuttings...use softwood
and/or semi ripe in the spring thru mid-summer...I've used 50/50
vermiculite/perlite with much success. I've never used rooting hormone with
these but I know that can be helpful. As far as the seed - I've yet to be
able to distinguish (sp) the seed from the dying flower head so I too would
be courious about this.
Good luck
