Re: seed storage
Anni-
All my seeds are kept in a small fridge in the garage. For (somewhat) easy
retrieval
I package small amounts of seed in paper or glassine envelopes and mark them
with the
date collected or bought, where obtained, common name and genus and species if
known.
Then, the seeds are put in widemouth mason jars with lids. Depending on how
many seeds I have the jars are marked "Wildflowers A-C", or "Snap Beans". I
have also
used glass baby food jars to store seeds, the tops reseal really well. In this
case the
seeds are not in an envelope, I just lable the jar. Use whatever system makes
sense to you.
I do have a friend that stores all envelpoes alphabetically in various
shoeboxes in an unheated bedroom. Her seeds are just fine stored this way. As
long as the seeds are kept cool and dry they will last for years. Here in
Colorado, I don't ever need to use a desiccant. This will just depend on how
severe the humidity is where you are. Just be careful of rodents-mice can eat
and entire years worth of seed in a few hours.
Hope this helps,
Caron
