Actually, we're dealing with 2 different species here, Datura and
Brugmansia. Some older references and catalogs use Datura for both, but
this is in error. Brugmansia are taller, shrub-like or even tree-like
tropical perennials. They can be grown in frost-free climates, but must be
brought indoors for the winter - they can be kept semi-dormant in a cool
basement. Brugmansias are also characterized by having DOWNWARD facing
flowers.
Daturas, on the other hand can behave as annuals in temperate climates.
The most commonly encountered member is Jimson Weed, Datura stramonium,
which is considered a pest in many parts of the country and has a
reputation for its poisonous nature, although virtually all datura and
brugmansia should be considered poisonous if consumed. The most commonly
encountered of the Datura are D. metel and D. inoxia (=D. meteloides), both
commonly referred to as Angel's Trumpets. They are most usually seen in
white (altho D. metel occurs in yellow and purple) and they characterized
by being low growing and having OUTWARD facing flowers. Both species are
most interesting and intensely fragarent.
I strongly suspect that you are growing D. inoxia.
