In addition to what's been mentioned you might try a short (~5 minute) soak
in 3% H2O2 (typical pharmaceutical grade hydrogen peroxide). Sometimes
several alternating cool/warm cycles will make the difference. Three
months for each temperature cycle should be sufficient.
