This is really basic, but I started two flats on top of the refrigerator, with very quick germination. Then I put them under lights and put my next flats across the top of the lights, which are a bit warm. More flats go on top of the refrigerator. I always have flats both places. I have had almost 100% germination with both perennials and annuals, some bought from seed companies and many gathered by hand from my garden and others. They have germinated much quicker than the envelope germination rates. I have had heat cables buried in gravel on one shelf of my plant shelving unit and I have used a cold frame many springs, but I broke my foot in several places and cannot use my basement germinating system of lights and shelves I usually use. I am growing seeds in our bedroom this year and I am getting much better germination this way and no algae like I usually get in raising seeds in the basement. Interesting how a temporary physical handicap can teach you so many new things. It's the pits when you drop a whole flat on the carpet, though......
