Its found in water that commons from areas with ingenious rocks - Much of Europe, Canada and the West cost of USA.  Its a natural product of weather of those rocks.

Like most toxic things its the amount that one comes into contact with that determines the hazard. Its safe in water and the amounts in the air from normal weathering is safe.

But when it was used in a concentrated form (there are different variations of Asbestos minerals) it was easy to breath in to much of it into the lungs, were it did cell damage.

These are small, long particles that form flat sheets.

The amount in vermiculite is not likely to cause a problem for the casual user, mining and process the vermiculite presents a great danger.  Dermal contact is not a problem-but any fine dust might contain some of the mineral.  Horticultural grade vermiculite is washed and filtered to remove most dust.
