I have been talking about composts to a lot of people because I have had a
very bad soil mixture last year that I used for all my plants. This caused
a lot of damage in my nursery. We have great trouble with this. The N
content in the compost I received was only 0,2 % and should have been at
least 2,5%. PH was 7.2 and all the other nutrients were very low in the
test results. We were very late to find out were the bad growth was caused
by Now we know and we now have another compost for potting up.
I haven't tried cocopeat myself. But I have heard some results from
colleages. I would not only like it for its quality but also for
environmental reasons. Peat is scarce and can't be renewed at the the tempo
we use it. Moors are being distroyed for peat production.
Cocaopeat is said to cause heavy root development, wich means it should not
be used in higher doses than 25% in soil mixtures for potting up. For
rooting cuttings however this would be very benificial. I don't use it
myself because I don't want to add fertilzer myself because I fear over or
under doseage.
There is also report of different qualities of cocaopeat. Because the
cocaoshells are washed in the sea the peat may contain a lot of salt. Good
quality has been washed, but this may also have been done chemically.
I also heard that cocaopeat will absorb Mg and K.
