Re: lilac suckers

Jill,
This is exactly how I got the lilac bush that grows happily
in my garden now. I don't remember the exact particulars,
but the leaves were out on the bush because I could only
recognise the suckers in passing that way. I do believe the
suckers were more than a year old; the original bush was
growing in front of a burnt out farmstead and the grasses
around it unmowed for some years. I mention this because
I've since tried to dig first year suckers with no success.
I simply dug this thing (beginning of June?) and replanted
it in my yard in a hole containing lots of rotted seaweed
and a shovelful of manure. It rarely gets anything else and
is a lovely twenty year old specimen, blooms every year.
Other years and other plants, I've separated the plant and
sucker in the fall by simply severing the root connection,
no other disturbance, then relocating in the spring.
Hope this helps.
Hannah
