Hello All,
I grow orchids in my home under lights. My shelves consist of 4' long
flourescent lights and 4 to a shelf. One shelf has 4 "Plant & Aquarium" bulbs
purchased for $6.99 at Canadian Tire (handyman's store). They are now all
about 16 months old and I have orchids coming into bloom. Orchids need their
light in order to set buds, so old bulbs can still work here. I had been
replacing my bulbs, but when money gets tight, and you have 20 bulbs to replace
each year (as I first only had 8) they will have to wait.
So I hope this gives you an insight on wether or not to spend that kind of
money for starting seeds under expensive lights. I started alot of my garden
plants here (Yes the orchids got moved to the windowsill for a period) with no
problems. They grew better here than on the windowsill.
Hope this helps,
Coreen
