Re:Seed Exchanges

While speaking of Seed Exchanges, as Seed Exchange Chair for the past four
years, I would invite you all to take a look at The Hardy Plant
Society/Mid-Atlantic Group, (HPS/MAG), which is based in the Philadelphia
suburbs, although members come from all across the country and some
overseas.

We have a rather unique seed exchange program. Unlike most societies which
list little more than the name of the plant, our Seed List provides a wealth
of information, including cultural, descriptive, and germination. We are
often told it makes for entertaining reading as well.

On the List you find not only wonderful hardy perennials, but many unusual
annuals, tender perennials, tropicals, bulb seed, grasses, trees, shrubs
and ornamental vegetables. The only thing we do not have are plants deemed
to be invasive in the Middle Atlantic region and ordinary edible crops. For
the past three years, our most requested seed was Papaver somniferum
'Lauren's Grape', which was originally donated by Jack Potter but
originated from Lauren Springer. It's a lucsious grape- jelly- purple annual
poppy!

Our donations come from regular backyard gardeners as well as from well
known gardens and gardeners like Charles Cresson, Pam Harper, Lauren
Springer, Wave Hill, Haverford Arboretum, and nursery owners like Tony Avent
of Plant Delights. Even our own renowned and beloved guru of this mail
list, Gene Bush, has donated seeds to our Exchange. (Gene: we're still
checking the mailbox for your seeds!)

Membership in the Society is $25 per year and includes participation in the
annual Seed Exchange, a quarterly newsletter, two plant sales, many
programs, a Gardens Open Day, and a biannual Guide to Member Gardens. The
Seed List is published around the first of the year and is mailed to all
members. If you wish to order seed, the cost is $10 which entitles you to
25 packets of seed.....donors and volunteers are entitled to another 10
packets and we give their orders priority. Joining the HPS/MAG before the
list goes out will allow you to participate in this year's exchange.

Chair, Susan Lennox, at gardengoo@aol.com for more information.
