Well then I may as well fish for some information there as well.  I fended
off whatever it was with lime.  Worked like a charm, until the rain would
wash it off and I'd forget to reapply the lime for a while.  The plants
would be fine, but then within the course of less than 3 days they would be
stripped to the stems.  It seemed like the work of a vigorous herbivore,
caterpillar or grasshopper sounds about right.  I never managed to see the
pest though.
