DDT is still very safe -- but one of it's breakdown products has a long life
in the averment and collects in fatty tissue of animals. This lead to an
accumulation in upper level carnivores such as birds of prey, were it
effected the structural strength of their egg shells.

DDT was so safe and effective that it was over used.
