Bee Heaven.... (was: Butterflies in the shade)

We have a double whammy for the bees over here as well -- a Crabapple that
they're just working over like there's no tomorrow, and a patch of wild
strawberries (about 30' wide by 15'-20' deep). The wild strawberry patch is
something of a story actually.

Back in December a neighborhood stray wandered into our yard and between the
stray who was pretty young and rambunxious, and our St. Bernard who hated
him and just chased him all over in back, well it's safe to say that pretty
much all of the grass back there was dug up. Wouldn't ya know it though --
their whole stampeding area came back in full glory this spring without
issue. Big surprise though, we didn't get grass but instead had wild
strawberries. We had cleared some brush and trees late autumn last year as
well, so there's a lot more sunlight over the area and I'm sure that's
contributed to the growth spurt. The honey bees, bumble bees, and 2 or 3
other species of bee are living it up. Our poor Saintie's been stung once
or twice when he got in the way of a bumble, and our little Lhasa-Poodle mix
chases the bees (go figure - we think it's the short-man complex translated
into the animal kingdom!). Naturally, the female Lab-Terrier just lays in
the sun and shakes her head at the boy dogs. :)
