Re: Landscaping Woes

I'm on a mountain in the woods of Eastern KY with mostly deciduous trees.
I'm starting (finally) to garden here and am looking to put in trees and
shrubs in advance in most perennials. For shady and dappled shade areas.,
I'm putting in rhodies, azaleas, hydrangeas, kalmia. Azaleas, unfortunately,
aren't doing very well and I have no clue why as the rhodies are great! The
azaleas are in more or less full shade, however. I'm also about to get a
pussywillow and a witch hazel. What other shrubby plants would you recommend
for around the house and, especially, around the covered front porch and
deck?

I have zillions of trees -- but am contemplating some ornamental trees. I
have redbud and dogwood as they are native. Anything else that could serve
as an understory tree (under maple, oak, poplar) that would be an
ornamental?

Soon, I'll be asking about perennials. :) But, for now, are there ANY
clematis that will grow in dappled shade (REAL dappled)?

TIA!
