In the shady narrow strip on the east side of the house we just moved into
which I just asked about, a double white clematis (I think this is called
Duchess of Edinburgh) bloomed every year. Last year, it was clearly not
happy. This year, it has not come back. However, it did last for some
years before it perished. Might be worth a try for you if you wanted
something showy and didn't expect permanence. Even a few blooms on a
double-flowered white in shade will create a show! This IS something to
think about, Bob. Light colored and white plants in shade will be much
more effective than dark.
