I think the full name is Jersey green sand. It is slightly coarser than beach
sand and I think it is collected from the seabed off the Atlantic coast. It
has a very low nitrogen content. The view is that it makes blue hostas bluer.
It is also a nutrient.
If you have all of The Hosta Journals and the indicies, check under the
author's name Zumbar. He wrote an article extolling its virtues.
I really don't know whether it helps much.It does make our native clay mo
re friable. I am doing an experiment with 11 potted hostas(same varieties) and
one of the group is getting no additives except Green Sand.
I'll keep you posted.
