Clyde has the basics on this. I just thought I would add that
greensand has been a mainstay in the organic grower's uses because it
is an excellent source of slow release potassium and mucho trace
minerals which are all good for general plant health. Even though it
may say on the package 0-0-1 it can be as high as 7% potassium. For
labeling purposes, organic fertilizers can only state what will be
available the first year (in potassium and phosphorus I believe... I
don't know about nitrogen) so figure the rest will be slowly released
over the next 5-7 years.
Interesting point is that New Jersey is the only place this stuff can
be found.
For potassium poor soils, 5 lbs per 100 sq. feet is reccommended. For
average soils, 3 lbs / 100 sq. ft.
You can't over apply though. No burning or other problems and it does
help bind sandy soils and break up clay soils.
For more info on this and other good organic soil amendments, try to
locate a copy of the May/June,1996 issue of Organic Gardening
Magazine. You should beable to find it at your local library.
Hope this helps.
