Greetings
Sherryl suggested as a new person on the list I should send a short
bio of myself and my garden. I hope this doesn't start any problems
with anyone.
I am Bill Kerr and I live on FROG HAVEN FARM with my wife, Anne. We
bought this place 5 years ago shortly after I retired. Lucky me, I
got to retire at age 52 and have been enjoying retirement now for
almost 7 years. We have four children in a his, hers and ours
grouping. Seven grandchildren and they live all over the world --
New Jersey, California and Thailand. We'll almost all over the
world.
I've gardened all my life or so it seems. Mostly in zone 6 and every
type of surroundings -- city, suburbs, and small farm. FROG HAVEN
FARM is 46 acres and is seven miles outside the town of Everett.
About 35 acres is woods with 4 acres in either hay or corn and an
additional 6 acres is grass.
Last fall I cut about 2 miles of trails through the woods. They are
about 8 feet wide. All the work is done by hand using only a lawn
tractor and cart to haul things around. All the trials have been
cleared of trees and I'm now in the process of removeing the stumps
with shovel and axe. We'll be planting shade plants along the trails
once the hard work is done and I know what I want to plant.
Another project is to landscaple around the the house. It's rather
bleak at the moment. I've just started to lay out the property on
paper using stakes and string to make the measurements. Only one
flower bed installed on the south side of the garage, 8 feet by 26
feet and Anne takes care of that one-- herbs and cutting flowers.
A large vegetable garden -- 40 feet by 65 feet and I've just
surrounded it with railroad ties. Then dumped four huge truck loads
of clay soil in the bottom end to level the whole area. I still need
to level it by the middle of May for planting the 500 or more plants
now growing in the basement under lights.
Another project is the shade garden to be developed in a triangle
just as you enter the woods beside the barn. I've pretty much
cleared it out and need to decide whether to remove any trees and
then what to plant in there. It can be seen from the house but it is
over 300 feet away.
Anyway I hope that is what Sherryl wanted and I hope no one is
offended. You can use the delete button at anytime you know.
