They look innocuous like small bees.Best way to tell is to look at nest. Does it look like one of those in cartoons? You know, Big roundish gourd-shaped nest?<BR>

P.S. Does anyone have or anyone has had ground hornets? They are the most frightening hornets(wasps?) I have ever encountered! <BR>
Also, when you buy a containerized hosta or other plant, make sure that there are no Black Widow spiders in it. Several years back a group was returning from the national hosta convention . They had bought a bunch of hostas in pots. One of the group went to sleep on the backseat. He/she woke up to find himself/herself covered with about ten of them. The only "good" part of this episode is that they were not Brown Recluses!!<BR>
