[SG] Ferns
Dear Deb, a few years ago, I bought a Himalayan Fern (Dryopteris
wallichiana?) from Forest Farm. It is doing well in moderate-deep shade,
no direct sun, within a couple inches of a stand of Siberian Irises and
overgrown honeysuckle. It has a very regular, yet delicate, look and a
nice golden-green coloration with a dark rachis. Osmunda cinnamomea took 3
years to establish and is not as spectacular as it looks in catalogues.
The netted chain ferns are the most prolific and impossible to kill. They
will establish in one season. Japanese painted fern does well even when
its roots have some competition.
Wayside sells a beautiful variegated fern call Arachnoides simplicior; I
paid, I believe, $27.00 for it when it was first offered and it struggled
so hard to make it through winter that it could not sustain spring growth
and died. They lowered the price last year, so I bought another and
planted it in an area where plants from zone 7B flourish - it looks like it
is dead again. Anyone who can give me a clue as to why I cannot keep this
plant alive please respond!
