Hello Beth,
Sure sound like you have found Gold Seal or Hydrastis canadensis. The
plant will enlarge in all parts as it matures for the season. Those
"petals" are actually only white stamens fanning out from the yellow
center. Will spread out more yet as will those two leaves. Treasure it. It
is being collected into oblivion by herbal fanciers.
