Hello Betty,
I have had the Chionoides in my garden for a while now... good performer
and goes well with many other early blooming plants. It is a dependable
bloomer and is a cultivar that performs well in our heavy clay soils. Will
grow larger than the 4' that is in the description, especially in the width
department. Blooms are a bit small and the clusters of blooms is not great,
but it is a nice plant that I like.
My Scintillation is slowly dying over time. Planted the same time as
Chionoides and Roseum. Roseum is doing even better that the other two.
Large and showy.
Everyone seems to have their own formula for planting a Rhodie. I like to
mix pinebark mini nuggets, sand and local soil from the garden in equal
amounts. Then I use 60% or more to back fill the hole. Mostly the Rhodie is
planted above our clay soil levels and then mounded. I keep mulched with
chopped leaves. Feed with any cheap acid fertilizer in Feb and then again
in June... if I remember it. Mostly I do not.
