Sounds like you're looking for dogwoods (Cornus spp.). They fulfill all
your needs, plus grow quickly. Also, persimmons give a nice high shade,
and the roots don't compete to the extent that maples do, but I don't know
if they are hardy in your area. I think Z4 is alright, as long as you're
not in a hilly area.
