Re: [SG] Parrotia persica and other small trees

Cindy, Forest Farm in OR has Parrotia persica in their catalog, but they
claim it is only hardy to zone 6. I would tend to believe Dirr if he says
4. If you phone them right away they may have some left and be willing to
waive the airmail requirement (it's after Apr 1, but you are far enough
north that hot weather during shipment may not be such a problem). Their
number is 541/846-7269. I'm not personally familiar with this tree,
however.

I just received an order from FF and it came surface; took about 10 days
but the plants had been well packed and were just fine! The Physocarpus
opulifolium 'Nugget' in particular is good sized and very pretty. Read
what Dirr says about that one! However, that is a shrub, not a small tree.

My Magnolia X loebnerii 'Merrill' is ideal to garden under. We've had it
about 10 years now and it's approx 15 ft tall. I highly recommend and it's
a zone 4. The stellatas I've seen around here rarely seem to get very tall
and seem more like bushes than small trees. My ancient redbuds are
underplanted with ancient groundcover but I would think if you started
with a new one in bare ground you would be OK.

Of course, from a West Coast nursery the shipping is going to kill you
esp. if it has to be by air. There is a nursery in MO that offers a lot of
intg stuff and shipping from there would probably not be so steep. Someone
on the SG list recommended it a while back, I believe, but I forget the
name.

this list grown it in zone 4 or even 5?? How are the roots on these trees
 for gardening under?
