Re: moving lilies
Ginny, from your description of "dig around with my hands", I'm guessing
your soil is considerably looser/sandier/loamier than mine!! There's no way
I could insert my hands into my soil without forking it over considerably
first.
In heavy soil, the most important thing I do when planting lilies is to put
a shovelful of gravel in the bottom of the hole. This lets water drain away
and prevents rotting of the bulbs.
