I'm using Mazus Reptans, a very soft light green groundcover with small
leaves and lovely pink flowers in the spring. It puts up with walking on.
It's good to zone 8. There's also a white-flowered version. It too spreads
and will go up a ramp, but it's quite easy to tear back, replant, whatever.
As for Ajuga, I find mine requires constant "weeding," since it will grow
over almost anything-rocks, juniper, etc. It seems more vigorous than the
Mazus. Nice flowers, though. I especially like the Burgundy Glow, and it
doesn't seem to grow as vigorously as the A. reptans. They're good to zone
9.
I'm using Epimedium as a groundcover too. E. x perralchicum, good to zone
9, grows well and can handle some sun and dryness; kindof tall, 16". Most
of the Epidmedium are very woodsy-looking and easy care plants, not all grow
quickly. Green through the winter, then mow in early spring for fresh
foliage.
Lots of very nice gingers (Asarum), many good to zone 9. Very fresh and
interestingly-mottled leaves on many types. Grow slower than the above and
you may have too much sun....

Subject: [SG] What type of groundcover do I use??
Hello everyone = I have and area about 60' long, and 7' wide that I am
considering planting a groundcover on.
The area is between 2 buildings with lot's of light, and gets about 2-3
hours of direct sunlight a day. I also have plants (scrubs), about 2'-3'
high, about 4' apart running the length of the area = each plant has plastic
edging around it, about 2" deep. I keep the scrubs well mulched, and use
landscape cloth as a barrier?
If I plant a groundcover = I would like to have one that I can control from
going inside the scrub areas. Someone suggested Ajuga to me, but doesn't
that propagate by underground roots? Would I have and uncontrollable problem
in that regard?
Any help or suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you
