Hi; I hope you planted it in a pot - sounds like it could be chokeweed (field bindweed). What a mess that creates.
Re: overwintering slugs - Slugs on my property find places under the foundation blocks of my garage and (mostly) in a large, thick patch of hardy ivy. I have seen frozen slug eggs in there during the winter, and I wonder if they survive freezing like frogs can.
