Silphium perfoliatum or "Cup Plant" is one plant I really like, they are tall
and flower late in the year, the butterflies love it-the other morning I was
looking out side and saw a monarch on the cup plant feeding. It would finish
and try to fly away, Rising about four to six feet above the plant, but it
had to return again and again. It was like it was full up with all the food
it needed, but when it tried to push it's way away from the breakfast table
it just could not leave without another bite.
For me this plant grows 6 feet tall in my semi dry area, it is attractive and
artitectial when not in bloom, when Mid August comes around it produce 20-50
flowers per plant.
The flowers are a bright clean yellow and about 2 inches wide for the larger
one and 1 inch wide on the smaller. They look somewhat like a large Buphalium.
for those that want to know of a good resource about our native prairie
plants- check out the below link that deals with the "Cup Plant"
