I would suggest Hosta montana f. macrophylla. It is quite spectacular and does
well for me in similar conditions. For spring bloom, surround it with Phlox
divaricata.(Most of the books will state that it needs a moist soil--not in my
garden.) Underplant with one of the hardy asarums. Add a touch of Lysimachia
nummularia 'Aurea'.

If you'd rather have an evergreen, try one of the dwarf, variegated hemlocks.
