Re: [SG] Daylilly Cross Pollination

Joe,

Daylilies are simple to pollenate and set seeds, but there are some
difficulties. Tets have fewer seed sets, and many tets are not pod
fertile. When it gets over 90 degrees, they will not cooperate. Dips are
much easier.
You can use pollen from a cultivar that you already have identified. If
it sets a pod AND forms seeds, then you will know. Or you can use a
microscope, comparing the pollen sizes of several different cultivars.
The size may vary somewhat from dip to dip, and tet to tet, but after
viewing several you will get a feel for the size difference. Miniatures
do have smaller pollen than large flowers, so the comparison will take a
little experimentation to master.
Easiest way is to visit another garden and gather a little pollen. Keep
it cool and dry. And be sure to get permission first. The pollen can be
refrigerated or frozen.
