Hello Barb,
In addition to Bobbi's recommendations of small Hostas and Ferns there is
a wealth of shade loving plants of small size that provide colorful foliage
and blooms. I enjoy the Pulmonarias or Lungworts. Blooms in March,
wonderful foliage all year long. There are the species Iris that enjoy
shade and have lovely blooms. I. cristata, I. verna, and I. gracilipies are
three of many. The Dwarf Merrybells are nice. Anemones and Anemonellas are
colorful and easy. The list really does go on and on. Shade is no obstacle
to a color garden.
