In this terrible, endless heat and drought I have been noticing certain
plants in the garden that have come through with flying colors and thought
it might be of interest to mention their names. Some are new to me and
might be to others.
The cleomes. One can have too many, but what doers they are! Nothing
seems to faze them.
The carexes. This was a surprise as they are supposed to like lots of
moisture. I have four different species and all are looking great, with
very little supplemental watering.
Kallimeris. It blooms and blooms with little white flowers and never seems
to run out of energy.
Ruellia (Wild petunia). I bought this native from Munchkin this spring and
have been amazed at its performance and appearance. It is like a tall
groundcover with blue violet fls. If it survives whatever awaits us in
terms of the winter and comes back next year, I am going to want much more
of this!
Coreopsis 'Moonbeam' and Aster frikartii 'Monch' have been good doers, and
as always Rudbeckia and Purple Cone Flower. Doubtless there are more I
should mention, but these in particular get a gold star.
